Strength Training for Runners Seminar
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
  • You will learn why strength training is so beneficial for runners and triathletes.
  • You will find out that conventional methods of resistance training can not enhance your running economy, optimize your running performances, add height to your max running speed, or maximally decrease your risk of running-related injury.
  • You will learn exactly how to carry out the three key forms of strength workouts for runners & triathletes— general strengthening, running-specific strengthening, and explosive work.
  • You will develop an understanding of the progressions in strength training which are necessary to optimize your running-specific strength and power.
  • You will find out how to blend your strengthening sessions with running workouts (and cycling and swimming sessions for triathletes) and how to periodize strengthening and running over the course of a year.
  • You will come to an understanding of the strengthening drills which are absolutely necessary to boost your maximal speed, the routines which are essential for economy, and the exercises which bolster your coordination so that you can become a “hyper-efficient, explosive machine” when you run.
  • Your will understand the importance of proper body alignment for both the exercises and actual running, and you will gain the knowledge to carry out each exercise absolutely correctly.
  • And one last thing—you will have tremendous fun interacting with Karen and Owen!

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:

Karen Ward - personal trainer, seminar presenterA personal trainer for the past 25 years, Karen Ward has been certified by the NASM, ACE, ACSM, and ASEP. Karen is the founder of Dynamic Fitness Concepts, which provides seriously fun fitness for runners and other athletes. She is an incredibly innovative creator of running-specific strengthening routines for runners and triathletes and is considered a master of the development of training progressions which keep runners’ strength, power, and injury resistance on steep upward slopes. Karen can make your IT bands and hams hum like no other running consultant. Robin Judice, PT, CSCS, former track and cross-country coach at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, says, “Karen has the best rapport with athletes that I have ever observed in a coach or trainer. She is extremely funny and caring—and amazingly knowledgeable about how the body functions during running. I progressed more in 12 weeks of Karen’s program than I had in the previous two years!”

Owen Anderson - running seminar presenterOwen Anderson, Ph. D., is the founder of Educatedrunner.com, the web site which bridges the chasm between the scientific and athletic communities. Owen is the author of three books on running— Lactate Lift-Off, Great Workouts for Popular Races, and Aurora, and he is currently writing a book for Human Kinetics Publishing called The Science of Running. He has enjoyed a successful career coaching both mortal and elite runners, including Benjamin Simatei (winner of the elite Park Forest 10-Mile Race in Chicago, Illinois) and Catherine Dugdale (seven-time Welsh cross-country champion and British representative at the Commonwealth Games) and has written extensively on the topic of strength training for running. Owen has traveled to Kenya on five different occasions to study the training habits and nutritional practices of elite Kenyan runners, and he is the developer of the “neural system” of training endurance runners, a program which de-emphasizes mileage and promotes the use of high-quality running and intense running-specific strength training to achieve optimal running fitness. Noted running coach Frank Horwill says, “Owen is brilliant and lucid on all topics related to running.”
